Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk

‘Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk’ is a Japanese video game developed by Gust. (Hey, that even rhymes!) This is a role-playing video game that was developed as part of the Atelier video game series and set up in the same type of game world. However, ‘Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk’ has a story line that is different and independent of the previous instalments of the video game series.

Storyline of the ‘Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk’ Video Game

The protagonist of this video game is Ayesha Altugle. Ayesha is an orphan and a lonely girl who owns and runs an herbalist’s workshop. The herbalist workshop belonged to her grandfather. But after his death, Ayesha took over the shop.

When Ayesha’s younger sister Nio disappeared, most presumed that she was dead. But one day, Ayesha sees Nio near some ruins. And that begins her journey to look for her little sister for she believed what she had seen and was sure that Nio was still alive.

In this world that Ayesha lives in, alchemy is no longer given any value. In fact, people barely even remember in this world that alchemy exists! But even though she runs an apothecary, she learns how to make and use different alchemy ingredients and becomes an alchemist. And then, Ayesha and her friends begin the journey to find her sister Nio.

During and throughout their travels through this world, Ayesha and her group collects a variety of alchemy ingredients from monsters and other places.

The main aim of the game is for Ayesha and her group to find Nio and for Ayesha and Nio to become a family again. Additionally, a major theme of the game is overcoming sadness. And as Ayesha writes her diary entries at various points in the game, the players will see her persevering, getting stronger, and growing as a person.

Gameplay of the ‘Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk’ Video Game

The main goal of the video game is to reunite Ayesha and Nio. Still, a major portion of the gameplay focusses on Ayesha’s (that is, the player’s) ability to purchase or harvest hundreds of different kinds of ingredients. The ingredients, once collected, must then be mixed in different combinations to create useful weapons, potions, or other useful items that will help Ayesha and her friends in their journey.

Players can also move around and explore the cities, shop at the stores they come across, accept different quests from the members of the different towns they visit, and even recruit party members. Battles and fights are also part of this game world, and are turn based. Players can also take the assistance of their party members in order to create combo attacks. This way, every character of the player’s side will earn experience points for their successes on the various battlefields.

Objectives and quests can also be defined and taken up in the game. But there is no particular order for taking up such objectives.

Ayesha, the main character in the game, is the only player character that can use items in a battle. The party of characters can, however, support each other with a combo of attacks and defensive manoeuvres. There are also battle techniques and items that are more effective at a certain range or position. For instance, a “Back Attack” is when an opponent attacks from behind. And this attack will make the subsequent strike a critical hit.

The player, as Ayesha, is also able to write in her diary. This can be done using the points that the player earns from completing the objectives available in the game. The diary allows the player to see how much Ayesha (the character, and by role-play, the player) has overcome and grown during the course of the game. Also, the player not only gets to look back on how far they’ve come and reminisce the story thus far, but the diary also allows the player to get bonus rewards within the game.
